    UAF's First Digital Computer
    IBM 1620 Computer with two people: one using, one watching

    The University of Alaska acquires its first digital computer, an IBM 1620. The computer is used as an aid in basic research, placer valuation, mapping, statistical analysis and data plotting.

  • 1963
    Research Expanded

    The spectrum of research conducted at the institute is broadened to include glaciology, high-latitude atmospheric studies and solid earth geophysics.

About

Since it was established by an Act of Congress in 1946, scientists at the Geophysical Institute have studied geophysical processes from the center of the Earth to the surface of the sun and beyond, turning data and observations into information useful for state, Arctic and national priorities.
