    The Geophysical Institute's New Home
    Elvey Building

    Construction of the C.T. Elvey Building, the Geophysical Institute's new home, is complete. Personnel move from the Chapman Building to the new site in June 1970, a project supported by Keith Mather.

    Arctic Haze
    Plane flying over arctic haze

    Geophysical Institute Professor Glenn Shaw discovers Arctic haze, the accumulation and layering of global air pollution in the arctic atmosphere.

Since it was established by an Act of Congress in 1946, scientists at the Geophysical Institute have studied geophysical processes from the center of the Earth to the surface of the sun and beyond, turning data and observations into information useful for state, Arctic and national priorities.
